Life in Osoyoos

Osoyoos, was incorporated as a village in 1946 and became a town in the 1980’s.  It is located in the southern part of the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia near the border with Washington state.

The origin of the name Osoyoos was the word suius meaning “narrowing of the waters” in the local Okanagan language (Syilx’tsn).

The town’s population of just over 5,000 swells in the summer months with visitors from elsewhere in British Columbia and neighbouring Alberta, as well as elsewhere in Canada. There is also a newer contingent of international visitors, supported by the proximity to the Kelowna International Airport about 1.5 hours north of the town.

The reason most of us are at the Oasis is because we want to be in Canada’s only desert and enjoy the warmest lake in Canada. The tip of the Sonoran Desert extends from Mexico right up to the Okanagan Valley.  This area receives an average rainfall of less than 12 inches per year. The desert plants and animals of this area are found nowhere else in Canada.
While irrigation has made Osoyoos a lush green oasis, the desert continues undisturbed where there is no water.

Wineries
Close proximity to 35 award-winning wineries, which offer tours and tastings.  Okanagan wines receive acclaim worldwide. The vineyards are nestled in the most scenic areas of the Okanagan. Wines from the Okanagan are receiving national and international recognition. Take personalized tours and treat yourself to some of these award-winning wines.

Golf
Osoyoos is known for great golf, which can be enjoyed for ten months of the year.  The 36 hole Osoyoos Golf Club is one of the southern Okanagan’s seven championship courses.

Family Fun
Osoyoos is so warm, sunny and beautiful that it is impossible to stay indoors for long.  Activities ranging from wakeboarding, waterskiing, and tubing, to walking one of the many interpretive nature trails in the area or cycling on the 11 mile International Hiking and Biking Trail, which passes many winery turn-offs by the time it reaches its end.  Rent a seadoo and take a ride on Lake Osoyoos, which stretches fourteen miles and is a favorite for summer recreation there are seven marinas in Osoyoos offering powerboats, personal watercraft, skis, knee-boards and tubes for rent by the hour or day.  For the thrill of a lifetime, try parasailing in Osoyoos or guided horseback rides through desert lands.
